| In this section, you will find some basic lessons in Japanese. The lessons are divided into general lessons, pronunciation and writing lessons.
Even though the lessons cover the basic level of Japanese, we have tried to mix in some Japanese characters. This is to make you comfortable with the characters. If it looks to hard, use the roomaji (alphabet), and make a try with the Japanese characters later. The beginner lessons have numbers starting at 100, and advanced beginner lessons starting at 200. |
100 – BeginnerThese lessons focus on the language structure and basic vocabulary. Language Basics
Pronunciation
Writing in JapaneseLearn the basics of writing and reading Japanese. Practise sheets to print out: |
200 – Advanced BeginnerThe advanced beginner lessons introduce casual and formal language. Language Basics

I just tried the Hiragana practice sheet link, and it works for me. It is a PDF file– perhaps your browser doesn’t like to load PDF files? Also, they can sometimes take a little longer to load than other content, so your browser may be set to time out too soon. That’s all I can think of. Here is the web address if you want to try copying and pasting it into the address bar of your browser directly:

every time i click on the pdf for the hirigana worksheet, a pop-up says ‘this file is broken and could not be repaired’. i’m just wondering why.

Please ask questions like this by posting them in the forum rather than in comments on the lesson pages.
“I like X” = “(Watashi wa) X ga suki (desu)”
You can often leave out the “Watashi wa” part if it is clear you are talking about yourself.
“I want to eat X” = “(Watashi wa X o tabetai desu”
The -tai (want to) form of verbs is discussed in the Language Reference Section, on this page: http://www.studyjapanese.org/content/view/59/66/

noel-san, hajimemashite.
I’m not sure what you are asking. By “worksheets,” do you mean the practice sheets for writing hiragana, katakana, and the first 1000 kanji? What “other grades” are you asking about?
9:26 pm on April 18th, 2010
hey um i have a question about the worksheets Is there any other grades 4 this?
6:43 am on March 31st, 2010
I really like this wedsites ihave learnt lots
9:41 pm on March 18th, 2010
You will probably want to look at a couple of the first ten Language Basics lessons before doing anything else. Since only the first one has sound files, it would be a good idea to look at the pronunciation pages after or while you are doing this. That will also introduce you to the hiragana, as well as the sounds of the language. After that, if you are interested in reading and writing as well as speaking and hearing, take a look at the four lessons under the heading “Writing in Japanese.”
If you have questions at any point, drop by the chat box, or post them in the forum. Hope you enjoy your time here.

No, there is no such correspondence between the letters we use in English and the syllables of the Japanese language. Your friend may have been talking about about a keyboard layout which takes these letters and gives the Japanese syllables you listed, or what your friend told you may be complete nonsense. There are a couple of things listed there which are not single syllables– rin, ari and mei– and given how the other syllables are spelled, tu should be tsu.
You can find out about the Japanese writing system in lessons W101 through W104. There are links to them on this page.

i really wanna learn hiragana, kanji, and also katakana.
but why can’t it show on my computer?
i alredy set the languange.
so, what should i do?
9:53 am on May 13th, 2009
Therese, hajimemashite.
Hiragana and katakana have no meaning by themselves; they are purely phonetic symbols, like letters in the alphabet used in English, except that they represent syllables instead of single consonant or vowel sounds.
Kanji have both meanings and pronunciations– but they can be pronounced differently depending on what word they appear in. It takes a considerable amount of time and energy to learn kanji.
When you are ready to ask more specific questions, please ask them via postings in the forum, or when other people are in the chat box, you can ask questions there.
Yoroshiku.
